Brunchin’ Beijing: Panorama Is the Perfect "Book Brunch" Spot

Those who know me well are aware of my deep and abiding love of brunch. It’s the perfect relaxed, non-time-constrained meal for catching up with friends or reconnecting with partners. But every once in a while I need some me time. And while trashy reality TV from my oh-so-comfy couch is always a viable option, occasionally what I really want is a chance to be in the world without actively participating in it. That’s when I grab a good book and go in search of a great meal. I call these my book brunches.

Panorama is one of my favorite "book brunch" spots. Their two-person booths are just private enough to give me a cozy place to unwind but still drink in the atmosphere of their casually sophisticated dining room and bar. My go-to order is always a French Martini (RMB 78), and the ultimate in comfort food is their Ham Bechamel Croquettes (RMB 72).

A few chapters in, just as the heroine is slaying her first dragon or the detective is about to unlock a vital clue, I decide between the Beet and Feta Salad (RMB 60) or the Salmon Buckwheat Rolls (RMB 48). Any of the crêpes (RMB 68-95) are also an excellent choice, and they always have a seasonal menu with something special on it. Personally, I will be sad when the Burgundy Snails (RMB 68) rotate out.

A few more chapters (and maybe a second martini) in, I finally give in to the inevitable…desert. Specifically the Tatin Crêpe (RMB 65). This crêpe is filled with caramelized apples and flambéed table side with rum. Despite promising myself I will only eat half, I always clean the plate.

Perhaps the best part of an afternoon spent in Panorama is the easy atmosphere. It’s energetic but calm, like a European café where you could happily spend hours people-watching. Definitely a more soul filling way to spend an afternoon than consuming a bag of Doritos while watching a marathon of table-flipping housewives (although that has its place too!).
